Facebook has launched a free WordPress plugin to help publishers easily create Instant Articles ahead of the platform’s global rollout. The company announced that Instant Articles would become available to all publishers — regardless of size or location — during the F8 conference held in San Francisco on April 12.

According to Chris Ackermann, Partner Engineering Manager at Facebook, the company partnered with Automattic, the parent company behind WordPress.com VIP, to develop the plugin. The goal was to simplify the process of generating and publishing Instant Articles directly from WordPress websites.
Because WordPress powers more than 25% of websites on the internet, Facebook aimed to make the Instant Articles experience accessible to millions of publishers worldwide. The plugin automatically generates a dedicated RSS feed that formats Facebook content into the Instant Articles layout for faster mobile performance and improved user engagement.
The plugin is open-source and fully customizable, allowing publishers to adapt it to their own publishing needs. Facebook also worked with a small group of WordPress publishers during the beta testing phase to ensure the plugin could seamlessly convert standard web content into the Instant Articles format.
In addition to faster loading times, the plugin includes interactive mobile-friendly features designed to improve the reading experience. Publishers using standard WordPress themes can activate the plugin immediately without advanced configuration.
For websites requiring additional customization, developers can extend the plugin to support extra design elements and publishing features. Facebook also encouraged WordPress publishers to review the plugin documentation and FAQs before implementing Instant Articles on their websites.
